[2025 Edition] Wear a Yukata and Join the Gion Festival — One of Japan’s Three Major Festivals!

Gion Festival

The Gion Festival is one of the three major festivals in Japan, held every July in Kyoto.
Also known as the Yasaka Shrine Festival, it has a history of over 1,000 years. The festival spans a long period of time and is especially famous for the grand procession known as the “Yamaboko Junko.”

Main Events

Yoiyama (Evening Festivities)

During the Saki Matsuri (July 14–16) and Ato Matsuri (July 21–23), yamahoko floats can be seen all around the streets, and lanterns are lit up in the evenings. Tourists visit the area on these days, and many food stalls are set up on the nights of July 15 and 16.

Yamahoko Float Procession (Yamahoko Junko)

The procession will be held on July 17 and July 24. Gorgeous Yamahoko floats parade through the center of Kyoto City.
A total of 23 floats will participate, each with its own unique features and adorned with traditional crafts.
